Barcelona defender Sergio Roberto will miss the rest of Barcelona’s current campaign and the start of next season following his sending off in El Clasico.
Roberto, 26, was handed a four-game ban for slapping Real Madrid’s Marcelo in last Sunday’s 2-2 draw at Camp Nou.
Roberto was given a straight red card in first-half injury time for the incident, during an off-the-ball tussle on the edge of Barca’s area.
The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced the ban was dished out for “assaulting another player” in its weekly disciplinary statement on its official website.
The match official, Alejandro Hernandez Hernandez, wrote in his report that Roberto had been sent off for “striking an opponent with his arm with excessive force while the ball was not near enough to be in dispute”
