Roberto Mancini has been appointed as the new Italy manager.

Mancini, who terminated his contract at Zenit St Petersburg last week, replaces Gian Piero Ventura who failed to guide his country to this summer’s World Cup.

The 53-year-old won 36 caps as a player, led Inter to three successive Serie A titles before overseeing City’s maiden Premier League trophy in 2011-12 courtesy of Sergio Aguero’s last-gasp goal on the final day.

He has signed a deal until Euro 2020 worth €2m-a-year with the option to extend the contract until June 2022.

Mancini’s challenge is to restore Italy to the international elite after they failed to qualify for the World Cup in Russia.

He will take charge of his first game against the UAE on May 28.
