Portugal and France both win to seal their spots in Russia 2018
Portugal beat Switzerland 2-0 to seal automatic spot while France clinch Russia 2018 spot with a 2-1 over Belarus
European champions Portugal have clinched their World Cup spot with a 2-0 win over Switzerland courtesy of an own goal from former Arsenal defender Johan Djourou and a clean finish from Andre Silver.
Portugal took the lead in the 41st minute when Eliseu curled a wicked cross into the box intended for Joao Mario, who collided with Switzerland goalkeeper Yann Sommer and Johan Djourou. The ball came off the defender and crossed the line for an own goal.
Bernardo Silva sent a pass through the six-yard box that Andre Silva controlled before putting the ball into the net in the 57 minute to give Portugal the deserved victory.
The victory over Switzerland means Fernando Santos’ team win Group B while Switzerland go into the play-off for the final.
France on the other hand beat Belarus to secure their spot at the 2018 World Cup with a 2-1 win over Belarus in their final qualification match.
First-half goals from Antoine Griezmann and Olivier Giroud proved enough for the Euro 2016 finalists, although Anton Saroka pulled one back for the visitors on the stroke of half-time.
