Portugal announce 35-man preliminary World Cup 2018 squad

Portugal have announced their 35-man provisional World Cup squad as there is no place for Renato Sanches after a disastrous loan spell at Swansea.

Fernando Santos named a 35-man preliminary squad for this summer’s tournament, which is expected to be whittled to 23 next month.

Renato Sanches is the only major absence for Portugal in the 2018 World Cup, as has failed to shine at either Bayern Munich or Swansea City and will play no part for Portugal in Russia.

Sanches, who was crowned Young Player of the Tournament at Euro 2016, hasn’t featured since January and failed to register a goal or assist during his time with the club.

Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo is joined by former Manchester United teammate Nani while there are a number of Premier League-based players, including Man City title-winner Bernardo Silva.

Southampton defender Cedric is named alongside Leicester’s Adrien Silva, Joao Mario of West Ham and newly-promoted Wolves star Ruben Neves.
