Manchester United activate one-year extention on De Gea’s contract

Manchester United have exercised the one-year option on goalkeeper David de Gea’s contract, tying the former Atletico Madrid to  Old Trafford until 2020.

De Gea, who joined United from Spanish side Atletico Madrid in 2011, signed a contract extention in September 2015.

His contract was due to end in the summer, allowing him to talk to overseas clubs from 1 January and sign a pre-contract agreement.

However, United have extended his deal for another year.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed this week after 1-0 win over Young Boys in the Champions League that United’s number one will sign for the longer term.

“He’s a world-class player, he’s the best goalkeeper in the world and if our ambitions are to be a big club, to be a winning club, you need the best goalkeeper in the world and you need also some other players who are the best in the world,” Mourinho said after the 1-0 win over Young Boys on Tuesday.

“We have the best goalkeeper in the world and I know he wants to stay, I know his agent is happy to do what the player wants and I also know the board want him to stay and they are working on that so hopefully sooner or later they will reach a conclusion.”
