Departing Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta has urged the Catalan giants to the everything possible to secure a long-term future of Sergio Busquets.

Iniesta, 34, announced his departure from Camp Nou at the end of the season and will bids his farewell to the Spanish champions on Sunday.

“If [Busquets] doesn’t stay, it will be a huge mistake for what he means as a player,” Iniesta told RAC1. “He has many years of football left and I believe that he is fundamental.

“I don’t know how things are personally, but it’s not good for the club to leave room for doubt.”

All had seemed set for the playmaker to leave for Chinese outfit Chongqing however a move to Japan may be on the cards ahead of next week’s announcement.

“Everything is decided and, in the absence of these last three days, we will finish polishing something,” he added. “It will be Japan or China.

“I will announce it next week, when everything is finished. I want to be the one who reveals where I will go.”

Ahead of Iniesta’s departure, many had criticised the fact he never won a Ballon d’Or, so much so that France Football publicly apologised for failing to award one.

“I don’t feel that they have to apologise,” Iniesta said. “I’ve been there, at those awards ceremonies, and I’ve really enjoyed it.

“In 2010, when we took the podium with [Lionel] Messi, Xavi and myself, it was very beautiful.

“It will take a lot to repeat that, having three La Masia players there.”

Barcelona will be a different beast without the midfielder and Iniesta entertained the idea of Gerard Pique one day becoming club president.

“I think it is possibility if it is his desire, if he feels he can be useful for the club,” he continued. “We’ll see what happens.

“[Xavi and Iniesta as coaches] could be another possibility. The players that we have been here owe a lot to Barcelona.”
