AC Milan sack head coach Vincenzo Montella, appointment Gattuso

AC Milan have appointed former player Gennaro Gattuso to takeover from Vincenzo Montella.

Italian giants AC Milan have sacked head coach Vincenzo Montella and replaced him with former player Gennero Gattuso.

Montella, who was appointed Milan manager in the summer of 2016 and led the team to sixth in his first season in charge, has failed to live up to expectation after the club invested heavily in the summer.

The Rossoneri played a goalless draw with Torino on Sunday leaving them in seventh in Serie A on 20 points, 18 points behind leaders Napoli.

Speaking after the game, Montella said: “I think the team is improving although we still miss the last step.

“The fans backed us during the whole game. I and the team need to accept the boos and whistles after a 0-0 draw at San Siro.

“We still have time, I don’t think the teams that are above us cannot be reached.”

Former Milan captain Gattuso was in charge of the club’s youth team and has now taken over the senior side.

A club statement read: “AC Milan announces the exemption of Vincenzo Montella from the post of coach of the first team.

“Montella is most appreciated thanks to the work done so far with his staff for commitment, seriousness and professional fairness.

“The technical management of the team is entrusted to Gennaro Gattuso, who leaves his post as Primavera coach, and to whom AC Milan offers the most warmest wishes for good work.”
